Yup. The original diagnosis was correct: my iPod is brain dead. Reset doesn’t fix it. Restoring in disk mode is unsuccessful. The guy on the AppleCare hotline has put the wheels in motion to get an iPod return for service box out to me ASAP.

Yeah, this day sucks. My 40GB iPod died, got home too late to call Apple and to top it all off, their support page where I could otherwise request repair keeps erroring on me.
